The first thought that most people have when it comes to imagining a Promotional Model and the work that they do, is the way that they look. Most people will be picturing a young woman in her early 20s who is very attractive, tall, has curves in all the right places, and is in runway model shape. In reality though, Modern Talent’s Promotional Models go beyond the typical stereotype.
Being a successful Promotional Model in today’s market goes beyond just outward beauty. Although self-care and maintenance of our appearance can be considered a lifestyle skill, there is so much more to just the way somebody looks to be successful in this industry.
The work that Promotional Models do is very different than the work of a print model. There at times can be a few similarities; however, the work that a Promotional Model, Trade Show Model, or Brand Ambassador does during their average work day plays a massive role in marketing and the idea of brand awareness. Some of the main objectives of promo work is to interact with customers or guests, and educating them about the brand that they are promoting, adding an overall personal touch to a brand. They help tremendously to increase the amount of exposure of a brand and its sales.
If you are someone who is thinking about starting a career in part-time or full-time promotional work, or you are trying to become a more skilled and experienced Promotional Model, there are a few key qualifications and skills that are the most important to focus on before you begin your first (or for your next) promo shift. Here are some of the main skills that Modern Talent believes make the strongest Brand Ambassadors on our nationwide team:
1. Understanding how to Communicate
Good communication is all about interacting with someone in a way that they understand the message that you are trying to convey, as well as listening to the other person intently, and giving appropriate responses at the right time. Communication is NOT about how much you can talk in a short period of time so you can talk to the next consumer in line, or how long a conversation with someone lasts. In reality, good communication is about what the consumer learns about a brand at the end of a conversation, and the lasting impression that a customer has about the product you are educating them on.
2. Understanding the Sales Process
When working an event in which the product that is being sampled and promoted is for retail sale, the Promotional Model must be aware of who their target audience is, and is able to be warm and welcoming to the consumer while inviting them to try the product. When the attention of the consumer is gained, this is when the Brand Ambassador would be informative about what the brand is, and why they should try it. While the consumer is sampling the product, this would the best time to talk about the key interesting facts about the product such as where it comes from, how it’s made, and what flavor notes are in it. Knowing the background and history of a brand, as well as what it is that makes the particular brand unique and special, will drive the consumer to be much more likely to buy the product being sampled. This type of sales process will lead to a higher volume of sales from the Promotional Model once the event is completed!
3. Understanding the Consumer
Having “people skills” is essential to be a successful Brand Ambassador for Modern Talent. In the Promotional Modeling industry, there will be exposure to all kinds of people from all walks of life. Although most consumers a Promo Model will talk to during a shift will be pleasant and respectful, there could be times where a person is rude or irritating. Although this type of behavior is unacceptable, a Brand Ambassador should understand that this is part of the job of working around people, and they should be able to always take the “high road” when it comes to rude comments from consumers, and handle difficult situations confidently and professionally.
Looks do play an important role in Promotional Model work, but there is so much more to this type of work than just outward appearance. Beyond the way a Promotional Model looks, the main focus is his or her overall image, presentation, and their self-care. All of these factors that go into being a successful Promo Model are extremely important when presenting themselves to a client and to a crowd of consumers.
Brand Ambassadors always come off the most professional and approachable when they are dressed professionally and in appropriate attire for their event. This means that:
- They have their hair washed and styled neatly.
- For women, their makeup is done and looks glamorous, but also natural looking.
- Their clothes are correctly coordinated with the other Brand Ambassadors or Trade Show Models working, from their tops, to the type of shoes that they are wearing.
- Clothes are clean, not wrinkled, and fit appropriately. Meaning that clothing pieces are not too baggy but also not too tight.
- They are upbeat, positive, and smiling. They are truly excited to educate the guests at an event of any size!
The way a Promotional Model presents themselves at an event will be the first thing that a consumer will notice. However, just a few moments later, the consumer or guest at an event will notice their communication skills, sales skills, and overall people skills. All of these skills are necessary to be successful in this industry. Having excellent sales, communication, and people skills is something that is noticed quickly by Modern Talent, and will result in getting booked for the best events!
Now that we are getting into the month of March and spring is coming shortly, how is everyone’s fitness New Year’s resolutions coming along? If you’re still actively engaged in your fitness goals for 2018, congratulations! Studies show that 80% of people fail their New Year’s resolution by February.
Coming up with a specific New Year’s resolution and actually sticking with that specific goal is very challenging. Especially while at the same time living your life of socializing with friends and family, working promotions and events, and possibly studying for final exams all at the same time.
It’s common to have a “love/hate” relationship with working out. We all need a day for a break, and that’s OK. There are actually many ways that you can easily incorporate exercise into your daily life that will make us feel good, without having to set aside time every single day to go to your gym!
Go for a walk with your roommate(s)
After a long day of work, instead of hitting the couch right away…ask your significant other or your roommate to go on a walk with you. It doesn’t have to be a long walk, but adding in the effortless exercise at the end of the day will be beneficial and it will feel great to get some fresh air and to get in those extra steps. If you have a dog, it’s a great opportunity to take your dog for a longer walk than normal. Your body will thank you, and so will your pooch!
Take the more challenging route
It can definitely be agreed that we all would rather take the elevator than walk up a few flights of stairs, or try and find a spot to park in the closest spot next to the store. But incorporating more activities into your day-to-day lifestyle means more calories burned over time. Breaking old, lazier habits can be challenging, but it can be worth it to do things that are outside of your comfort zone. Park at the back of the lot so you have to walk further to get to your in-store demo or bar promotion. If your Modern Talent shift is in your neighborhood, set aside extra time to walk there instead of driving. (If you feel safe doing so)
The easiest habit that you can break is to always take the stairs over the elevator. Stair climbing is a great workout, and will help make your legs look great!
Choose a healthy lunch
When you’re getting yourself to add more fitness and exercise into your daily routine, sometimes it feels like you can’t eat out over the option of making a healthy sandwich or salad at home. This doesn’t always have to be the case. No matter what city you’re located in, whether you’re a Minneapolis-based Promotional Model, or a Fargo-based Brand Ambassador, there are always healthy options when deciding to eat out over making a meal at home.
A significant number or Modern Talent’s Promotional Models are based in the Twin Cities. A great option for a place to eat that is local to Minneapolis, and has an entire menu of healthy options is Crisp & Green. It’s minimalist atmosphere is designed for people who either have time to sit down, or are on the go. Their rice bowls and salads are customizable to your diet, and if you’re really in a hurry there is another menu of delicious smoothies that will give you the energy needed for a long day!
There is a lot that goes into planning an event. Whether it’s a bar promotion, trade show, brand launch, an in-store tasting, or any other gathering… there is strategic planning and time that is involved. Because of this, the Promotional Model that is booked for an event of any size is expected to execute the event flawlessly while confidently educating consumers on the brand that they are representing. Here are a couple of the important factors that go into running the perfect event!
Timing is EVERYTHING- The time that you arrive is the first impression that the account and client will have of the Brand Ambassador. It’s so crucial to be punctual and arriving to the event that you’re booked for 15 minutes early. Coming to an event at the time that it starts is considered being late, and makes you and your agency look unprofessional.
Knowing Your Location
Being aware of where your event is located goes alongside with timing. It’s important for a Promotional Model to prepare for an event ahead of time by looking up the location and how long that it will take them to get there. Also knowing what available parking there is, and planning ahead if they need to set aside some extra time to find a parking spot or a parking ramp. If there is little to no parking available, sometimes it’s best to take an Uber so that less time is wasted on finding a parking spot and walking to the account.
Have Materials Ready
It is important to have all of the POS items and sample bottles you are going to need for a promotion right there ready to go. Never arrive to an event or trade show unorganized or missing important materials that you need to sell a brand. The promotion is certain to run smoothly if the Promotional Model makes sure to have everything that they need beforehand. Revisiting the detailed information about the promotion the day of, and knowing what the goals of the event are, is beneficial for everyone.
Know Your Contacts
You can run into several problems during a promotion. A Promotional Model should know exactly who they need to contact in an emergency BEFORE they arrive to the promotion. This will help eliminate any problems or issues that the Brand Ambassador may face. Also, Modern Talent’s Promotional Models are required to call the account ahead of time to make sure managers and other employees of the account know that a promotion will be taking place.
The way you that a Promotional Model portrays themself reflects directly on the client that they are representing, as well as Modern Talent. Presentation is not just limited to making sure that hair and makeup is done, and their clothes are appropriate and clean; but it’s also about the Model’s knowledge of the brand, and presenting the product. As always, one of the most important qualities of a great Promotional Model is always maintaining an enthusiastic and positive attitude throughout the entire promotion.
You may often wonder why there is so much pressure to save money. You might be thinking, “I have enough to pay for everything that I need, why should I put even more money away each month?” There are countless benefits to saving money, the hard part of starting to save is getting into the habit of saving your hard-earned income. Everyone saves their money for different reasons, but saving ultimately puts less stress on yourself and gives you a peace of mind if something were to happen where you need to cover unexpected expenses.
Here are a couple of easy tricks to save money that will make you wish you had started doing sooner!
This might be the most difficult change to make. Most people enjoy going out to eat. It’s easy and convenient, and you don’t have to spend time in the kitchen making your own meal and cleaning up your dirty dishes after. However, making a habit out of going to restaurants multiple times in a week drains your bank account quickly. Cooking is really not that hard, and there are so many books and websites out there with quick, healthy, and delicious recipes. Not only will you save your money, but you will also most likely be more aware of what you are eating, leading to better health.
Pick a small percent of your paycheck to put into savings:
An easy trick that some of our Promotional Models at Modern Talent do to save their money that they make working events is to put a small percentage of their paycheck into a savings account. Putting even just 5% of payday money into a savings account is extremely beneficial for unexpected emergency funds, and you will hardly even notice a change to your “spending” account!
Pick up more shifts on the weekends
This one seems like a no-brainer. The more you work, the more money you make right? If you find yourself not having too much going on for plans for the upcoming weekend, deciding to go and work a promotion, event, trade show, or sampling means getting a bigger paycheck. Not only will you get a bigger paycheck and more to save, you will also be able to socialize with others, and likely work alongside another Promotional Model from Modern Talent…meaning a more productive and fun weekend!
Travel with another Promotional Model
Traveling can become spendy, especially if you are booked for an event somewhere that’s a longer commute from where you live. By planning ahead and coordinating with who you are working a promotion with, carpooling with one another and splitting the cost of gas can be a noticeable cost savings. Not only is it a cost savings for more than one Brand Ambassador, but you will also have someone to chat with while on the road to your event!
Over the past few years, social media has become more and more popular. Each day, there are apps that are created that make our social media net wider, and help make our photo posts on Instagram, Facebook, Twitter, and others more eye catching, bright, and vibrant for viewers. Having photos that are clear and attention getting will always result in more likes and followers, which is usually always the main social media goal of all businesses (and for personal social media use).
There are countless apps that are available in the app store, as well as downloadable software for your computer that are great for photo editing. However, some are far better than others. Here are some apps that are available that are good quality, easy to use, and affordable. They will help and turn your Promotional Modeling photos into an “Instagram-Worthy” post that your agency will love!
This app is available for free on the Apple App store. The app gives you SO many options for quick and simple editing tasks such as increasing the brightness and exposure of a photo. What’s great about using this app is the “portrait” feature which brightens up all the faces that are in the photo. This feature is amazing for a group of Promotional Models where the lighting in a bar or event venue isn’t quite right, leaving shadowy faces in the as a result. Using Snapseed will result in brightening up multiple Brand Ambassadors’ faces, as well as creating a bright, eye-catching post for Instagram.
Photoshop is available to download on your computer, and is also available for free in the App Store. Although the download of Adobe Photoshop is free, there is a cost for a monthly membership, which is around $20 a month. If that is something that you are able to fit into your budget, having the skill of using Photoshop for enhancing and editing out unwanted objects from a photo would be very beneficial for a Promotional Model when submitting pictures from a Trade Show, Promotion, or In-Store Demo. If you aren’t familiar with how to use Photoshop, there are countless video tutorials on YouTube that will take you step-by-step of how to to perform a specific task.
3. Perfect 365
Perfect 365 is another free app that is available on the Apple App store. This app is very user-friendly and straight to the point for anyone who isn’t a “pro” at editing pictures. Some of the key features that this app provides is getting rid of red-eye, removing any unwanted under eye circles, and even can enhance the look of your eyelashes (while still looking natural!) Be careful while using this app to edit your Brand Ambassador photos, it can be easy to go “overboard” while enhancing facial features, so make sure to be aware of how much of Perfect 365’s features are being used on a single photo.
This is an app that we are all familiar with! Most of us use Instagram on a daily basis to check up on social media. But, Instagram is actually a great tool for editing and adding a perfect filter to your social media posts. What is great about using this app for editing is that when choosing a filter, you can make the filter less “intense” after choosing one. You can also use Instagram editing for adjusting exposure, adding highlights, warmth, and just the right amount of brightness to your pictures to get the engagement on your post that you want!
This coming Sunday, there will be a countless number of Patriots, Eagles, and Vikings fans coming to the city of Minneapolis to watch Super Bowl LII. To get a better idea of how many people will be traveling to the great state of Minnesota, there is an estimated ONE MILLION football fans that will be making the trip up to the north land over the span of the Super Bowl weekend.
I’m sure many tourists who have never been to Minneapolis before are wondering, “What is there to do in Minnesota?” and “What is there to do when it’s freezing outside?” The answer to both of these questions is… a lot of things! Here are just a few of the many options for fun things to do when visiting Minneapolis (even when it’s cold outside!)
Go Ice Skating:
Want a true Minnesota experience? Go visit an outdoor ice skating rinks or a frozen lake with your family and friends. Doesn’t matter if you grew up playing ice hockey all your life or have never tried on skates before, people of all skating levels take advantage of the public outdoor rinks. If you don’t own your own skates, that’s okay too! Many of the outdoor skating rinks provide free rental skates, including Lake of the Isles in Minneapolis.
Visit the Mall of America:
Going to the Mall of America is an absolute must-see for someone who has never experienced it. It’s considered to be one of the most visited tourist attractions in the world! There’s things to do for people of all ages, interests, and food preferences! Shopping is not the only thing that the Mall of America has to offer. There’s also a theme park, movie theater, aquarium, and much more! Also, tourists will be able to stop by and visit our lovely Promotional Models at the Best Buy located in the mall through Saturday!
See Downtown Minneapolis:
This whole week leading up to the Super Bowl will have so much action going on all over the city. Downtown Minneapolis has incredible views, especially at night. Take a walk downtown and check out all the cool things to do and see, such as visiting one of the many restaurants, and tasting beer from the local breweries. Modern Talent’s Promotional Models will be promoting Jim Beam at Grumpy’s, so be sure to try a complimentary sample! And of course, you won’t be able to miss the beautiful new US Bank Stadium, where the big game will be taking place!
St. Paul Winter Carnival
The annual St. Paul Winter Carnival conveniently is taking place during the same time as the Super Bowl, meaning that out of town visitors can soak in all the winter activities that Minnesota has to offer. The carnival includes a beautiful ice palace, a disc golfing competition, and many family activities! There is also ice skating, free to the public live music, and snowmobile stunts performed by skilled athletes. There would be something for everyone to enjoy there to make the most out of their midwest travel experience!
At Modern Talent, we take pride that our Brand Ambassadors, Wine Professionals, Promotional Models and Trade Show Models are fun, intelligent, outgoing, and professional. Over the years that Modern Talent has been a part of the promotions industry, a majority of our events where we are promoting liquor and wine brands require the Promotional Models to be over the age of 21. Because of this required minimum age to work in a bar or liquor store, many of our Models work for Modern Talent while they are pursuing a college education.
Since Modern Talent is a Minneapolis-based agency, many of our Promotional Models are currently attending college at the University of Minnesota or the University of St. Thomas. Along with colleges that are in Minneapolis, there is a multitude of other college cities where we staff a variety of events. Such as Duluth, St. Cloud, and Mankato Minnesota. We also have opportunities for college students to pick up part-time Brand Ambassador work in Fargo and Grand Forks North Dakota, Lincoln and Omaha Nebraska, and Denver Colorado. (Just to name a few!)
There are MANY benefits to working for Modern Talent as a college student. Here are 4 of the top reasons that our staff works with us while continuing their education:
It’s Not Fun Being Broke:
A big part of being a college student is being on a “college budget”. When you aren’t able to spend much money on yourself, it’s tough to pass up on a dinner or night out with your friends, or not being able to buy a new cocktail dress for a formal event. We pay our Promotional Models a starting rate of $25 an hour, and our shifts are normally around three hours long. Picking up just one tasting or bar promotion per weekend would be about an extra $300 a month in your pocket! For someone who is on a tight budget, there is a lot you could do with that extra cash!
Brand Ambassador work teaches college students how to speak confidently in front of groups of people, and a variety of other skills that can help prepare them for their future careers. Having a job with Modern Talent is a great resume builder for college students who are looking pursue a career in sales, leadership, communication, and/or marketing upon graduation!
Being a Promotional Model is Fun!:
Most jobs while being a college student include working in a library or other on-campus building, or working inconvenient, weekend daytime hours at a store inside of the local mall. How many students can say that they get to go to their favorite college bars, and actually get paid to give out free samples and merchandise, talk about the amazing liquor brand they are representing, and take fun photos?! Not too many!
Making New Friends:
Because our Promotional Model staff is all energetic, outgoing, and fun, there are many new friendships that are made after two or more people are booked for the same shift together. It’s fun to see that many of our Models become friends and hang out together outside of work! For students that are new to their college town and want to get to know people, or just would like to branch out of their social circle, working for Modern Talent is a great opportunity to start new and possibly even lifelong friendships!
Whether you’re a hard-core Vikings fan, a fan of another team in the NFL, or you just look forward to Sundays for an excuse to drink bloody mary’s with football playing in the background… I’m sure you’re aware that the Super Bowl for 2018 is going to be held at US Bank Stadium in Minneapolis, MN!
This is the first time the Super Bowl will be held at this beautiful new stadium, and Minnesotans are SO excited and proud to be the hosts of this special event. Especially since the Minnesota Vikings are just one step closer to being one of the teams that plays in the game. If the Vikings beat the Eagles this coming weekend, it would be the first time in NFL history to have the hosting team also playing in the Super Bowl. Amazing!
Modern Talent is just as excited as the rest of the Vikings fans and state of Minnesota, because many of our Promotional Models will be able to experience being in the Super Bowl atmosphere, both leading up to and the day of the main event! We are looking forward to our Models having the opportunity to promote Jim Beam the day before and the day of the big game at Grumpy’s next to the stadium!
Never been to Minneapolis before? The first week of February would be the best time to go and experience the beautiful, charming city with great food and hotel options, as well as the nicest locals. “Minnesota nice” is definitely a real thing!
If you’re not planning on getting a ticket into the game, there’s so many places to watch from that will give you just as great of a NFL fan experience. A few downtown Minneapolis places that would be great to check out after stopping at Grumpy’s would be: The Pourhouse, Sneaky Pete’s, Cowboy Jacks, and The Armory, which is the newest nightclub experience in Minneapolis. They will be hosting a Super Bowl party that will have performances by music artists P!nk and Imagine Dragons.
Bars in Minnesota are usually open until 2 a.m. for customers. However, an exception was made JUST for the Super Bowl weekend, and many popular bars will be open two more hours until 4 a.m! Minnesota locals will be taking full advantage of this special occasion, hopefully spending the extra two hours celebrating what will hopefully be a FIRST Vikings Super Bowl victory!
Along with promoting Jim Beam, there’s a good chance if you’re downtown Minneapolis that you’ll see the Models of Modern Talent out promoting Bacardi. We will also be sampling Yellow Tail Wine and Revel Spirits near US Bank Stadium.
Our Promotional Models do not only represent liquor and wine brands, they are always educated and looking forward to teaching consumers about products in many industries across the board. You will also be able to go to visit and talk to our energetic and outgoing Models at Best Buy in the Mall of America, where they will be educating locals (and the out of state football fans) on the newest technology that Best Buy has out on the market! Modern Talent and their Models are proud to be representing this incredible electronics and entertainment company.
Whatever the outcome may be for Super Bowl LII, Minneapolis being the host is very exciting! Modern Talent is looking forward to having their Promotional Models out experiencing this iconic sports event. Being a part of the Modern Talent team makes you realize that work can be fun too!
“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Wayne Gretzky
Failure, although it hurts to admit at times, is an inevitable part of our lives. We would all like to believe that we won’t ever make mistakes, both in our personal and professional lives. In a perfect world, everything we do would go our way and just the way we plan them to without any setbacks. But at the end of the day, mistakes will be made, and we will all be faced with more than one failure in our lives.
People will face failures that are both big and small. From spilling your coffee on a new shirt, to not making your personal sales goal at your wine tasting, to not receiving an offer for your dream job.
As much as failing puts us in a negative and discouraged mood, having these life-altering moments ultimately make us work harder to reach the level of success we are all striving for. As famous author J.K Rowling once said to a graduating class at Harvard University, “It’s through failure that we learn the greatest lessons that life could teach us.”
Failing seems to be a taboo subject. Everyone loves to hear about successes and how well our family and close friends are doing, but failure is something that many people don’t feel comfortable talking about. Of course we all want to celebrate success, EVERYONE wants to reach success in their lives! But to get there, it takes hard work, goal setting, and falling on your face a couple of times to really learn what to do differently. It’s just not seen as “glamorous” or uplifting to discuss the obstacles and setbacks faced when reaching a goal.
The most successful people have faced failure in their careers. If you really think about it, if you go through life without failing, you really aren’t learning anything at all. It’s how you learn and grow in many aspects of your life, starting at the very beginning. Have you ever seen a baby learning how to walk? They fall down, over and over again. But eventually after much determination and practice, they get back up and find their balance!
The same concept of falling down and getting yourself back up again can be applied to sales and promotions. If sales aren’t where you would like them to be while working a Modern Talent shift, try asking yourself “What could I have said to make the brand I am representing sound even more appealing to the customer?” or “Would they have bought the product if I was more excited and educational while talking about it?” Understanding what you can do better to improve your sales and brand image are the first steps toward being a successful Brand Ambassador.
There are two different reactions that can happen when facing something that was unplanned: The individual could become discouraged and lose motivation to continue reaching their goal. Or, the individual could take the time to reflect on why they failed, think about what the next steps toward success would be, and work harder and more strategically, learning from their past mistakes.
Be the person who stays determined and finds their balance, and success will follow!

Boston is also known for their tourist attraction of the Freedom Trail, which gives you an educational and hands-on background of the early history of the United States.
Restaurants: If you are a foodie, Boston would be a great place to visit, especially if you are a seafood lover! There are many favored local restaurants in Boston with many diverse food options, so that’s good news for people who don’t enjoy eating from the sea. If you’re looking to have a Boston seafood experience, some of the favorite places in town is The Barking Crab and Neptune Oyster. There are plenty of restaurants that have gorgeous ocean views to sit at to sip cocktails with your friends and family.
Nightlife: Another great thing about the city of Boston is that it caters to people of all ages, lifestyles, and wants. With the city being in a very popular college town, there are nightclubs that will be more catered toward people who are college students looking to have a night out in an outgoing environment. There are also lounges and bars that are more low-key and easy to have conversations amongst one another at. Whether you’d like to have a fancy cocktail and a few appetizers, or a craft beer, there will be a place to go on a night out in Boston that will make you never want to leave!
