The holidays are finally here! It’s the best time of the year to spend quality time with your close family and friends, eat delicious food, drink yummy cocktails, play games, decorate the house to make cozy and festive, and repeat beloved annual traditions!
Around the holidays, especially when it comes to New Years celebrations, sparkling wine is often the beverage of choice to bring to a gathering. Whether you are a sparkling wine “expert” or have no idea what any of the differences are between all of them, it can be overwhelming to be in a liquor store, bar, or at a wine tasting and looking at all the different types of sparkling wine and the different aray colors that they all are. When wandering and getting lost through the isles of the liquor store, looking at all of the countless bottles can be intimidating, time consuming and even frustrating at times to figure out the perfect sparkling wine to bring to a party.
Our Wine Professionals at Modern Talent would be thrilled to assist a fellow sparkling wine lover to find that perfect wine to bring to their New Years party or other holiday celebration. There are many different types of sparkling wine that range from sweet to dry, and by sampling different types of these sparkling wines at your local liquor store, it will give you a way better idea of what to bring to your gathering. For an event such as New Year’s Eve, champagne and sparkling wines are extremely popular amongst the guests. You’ll want your first sip of wine of 2018 to be something you and the other party guests will all enjoy! Champagne complements the best with salty foods like pretzels or chips, especially if the champagne is dry like a brut. The saltiness in the food will make the champagne taste more refreshing. If you are the one hosting a gathering, or are asked to bring a snack, bringing a salty treat is your best option!
- Sofia: Made at the famous director Francis Ford Coppola’s California winery, this sparkling rose is the perfect bottle to bring to a party, just for the appearance of the bottle alone. The gorgeous bottle comes wrapped in a blush pink wrapping, and is hard to miss in the sparkling wine section of the store. It’s a fantastic sipping wine, and pairs well with a wide variety of foods. Everyone will love the strawberry and light lavender flavor, and has a “kiss of spice” at the finish. This would be a good choice for a crowd of guests who like fruitier, sweeter, and a lighter texture to their sparkling wine.
- Mumm Napa Brut Prestige: Mumm Napa is known for their incredible sparkling wines for all types of wine lovers. Mumm Napa Brut Prestige is their signature sparkling wine, that has won the most medals than any other in its class. This would be a great sparkling wine to pop open while people are enjoying hors d’oeuvres such as shrimp cocktail. This is a great choice for a sparkling wine that will be a “crowd pleaser” because of its rich finish and vibrant flavors of citrus and honey!
- Ste Michelle Nicolas Feuillatte: This Champagne is also a great option to bring to a New Year’s Eve gathering. It has a fresh and crisp texture to it, and is easy to drink! The quality of this sparkling wine, which was created at the Nicolas Feuillatte winery, is quick to pick up on. Bring along a bottle of this, and it will be gone within minutes after other guests taste the soft character and lemon notes!
If you still can’t decide what kind of bubbly will go over well at your holiday gatherings, check out your local liquor stores, because there’s a good chance that one of our Wine Professionals or Promotional Models from Modern Talent will be sampling all different types of options of sparkling wine to sample during the holiday season!
It is very true that there are a lot of garbage reality TV shows out there to watch. Although most of us hate to admit it, we’ve all had those days and nights where we don’t leave our couch to do anything productive. On these days, we choose to brainwash ourselves with a marathon of awful (and obviously dramatically scripted) reality TV shows on Bravo, ABC, MTV, E!, or a little mix of all of them.
There are multiple ways that you could look at a reality TV binge. Watching hours of television in one sitting isn’t exactly as productive as getting some work done, answering emails or going to the gym. However, have you ever thought about what our favorite reality television shows have taught us? Has Snooki from Jersey Shore or Yolanda Hadid from Real Housewives taught us skills that we actually use? It’s possible that there are some skills learned from these Bravo binges that we haven’t thought twice about!
Catfish: This popular show on MTV can teach us a lot about the risks of talking to people online that you have never met in person. If you have watched a couple of the intense and emotional episodes, you’d quickly realize that people are often not who they say they are or look like they do in their photos. What we can learn from watching Catfish is that we should be careful about who we talk to (or date) from meeting them online or through a dating app. Anyone can be dishonest about who they really are behind a screen! If you did ever want to meet up with someone you met online, ALWAYS meet them in a public place. When our Promotional Models are working a bar promotion together, we strongly urge them to meet up together before, and walk each other to their vehicles after their shift is over, for their safety.
Jersey Shore: Who could forget about this iconic east coast Italian-American reality show? It was always entertaining to watch the cast’s GTL (Gym, Tan, Laundry) lifestyle, and keep up with their dramatic nights out at the New Jersey clubs. Unfortunately, this show is no longer on the air, but there are many lessons to be learned from this overly sun-tanned cast. Basically their only “responsibility” on the show was to show up to their part-time job at a Jersey Shore souvenir shop. Cast member Angelina decided that she didn’t want to go to work, and just didn’t show up! This resulted in her boss firing her, and getting booted off the show entirely. The clear lesson here is to always be a responsible adult and show up to work! At Modern Talent, we take pride in our reliable and trustworthy staff, and there is zero tolerance for being late or not showing up to a shift.
The Bachelor: If you have never watched a season of The Bachelor, or even one episode, I highly recommend watching this rollercoaster of a show! Over twenty women competing for one man…what could go wrong? The Bachelor gets dramatic VERY quickly, there isn’t an episode that has never been aired where someone isn’t crying at some point. Although competing against other women for a man’s love/attention seems wrong, there can be a lot learned from the show. It’s easy to catch on to the women who are jealous of others, and who causes the most unnecessary (but entertaining for viewers) drama. Being confident, assertive, and true to yourself tends to result in getting more roses, and can get you much farther in your life goals/career as well! We think it’s extremely important that our Brand Ambassadors are confident, engaging, and outgoing, because this results in higher brand recognition and a bigger and better impact on an event.
Next time you decide to spend your Sunday being lazy on your living room couch binge watching your favorite reality television shows, don’t feel guilty! (Unless it becomes a habit). Think about the lessons that can be learned from the cast, and how you can apply it to your life and your job in a positive way!
Although Modern Talent is a Minneapolis-based agency, we provide Promotional Models, Trade Show Models, Brand Ambassadors, Wine Professionals, and Samplers in many parts of the United States, including the east and west coast! One of our biggest markets besides Minneapolis and Chicago for Promotions and Liquor Samplings in particular is the thriving and artistic city of Omaha, Nebraska!
What exactly is in this Midwest-based city? The answer to that is endless. There is a lot to do, places to see, and great perks about living in the city of Omaha. Our lovely Promotional Models who live in Omaha as well as Lincoln love living in these Nebraska cities, and we can 100% understand why they’d never want to leave!
University of Nebraska-Omaha: Many of our Promotional Models and Brand Ambassadors live in the city of Omaha because they are undergraduate or graduate students at the University of Nebraska-Omaha. This D1 University is the home of a great hockey team, has a fun and lively atmosphere, and provides many options for different majors and career paths. Along with UNO, Omaha is also the home of Creighton University, which is also known for their academics and graduate programs. Having a job with Modern Talent is a great resume builder for college students who are looking to pursue a career in sales or marketing upon graduation!
Things to Do: There are countless options of dining, shopping, salons, breweries, and more located in the beautiful city of Omaha. The city itself is known for its arts and culture. If you are someone that enjoys going to shows or plays, check out The Rose Theater or the legendary Blue Barn Theater for some live entertainment! Omaha is also known for their zoo, which has the largest indoor desert and nocturnal exhibits, and an indoor rainforest!
Restaurants: There are many favorite local restaurants in Omaha with many diverse food options for whatever craving you may have. There are many different places if you’re looking to enjoy a sushi dinner, one of the favorite places in town being Sushi Japan. During the warm weather months, there are plenty of restaurants that have gorgeous patios to sit at to sip cocktails with your friends and family. Corkscrew Wine & Cheese has an outdoor patio and is surrounded by scenery with a fireplace to keep you warm. People of Omaha recommend this restaurant to go to if you want to have a relaxing evening and a smooth glass of wine!
Breweries: Along with the restaurant scene in Omaha, there are also plenty of craft breweries to check out while you are visiting (or thinking about moving). There are about 20 brewery locations to add to your list of destinations, so you may need to visit more than once to be able to try them all out! Infusion Brewing is known for their variety of craft beers to satisfy any palette, and they brew them all year-round!
Nightlife: Another great thing about the city of Omaha is that it caters to people of all ages and personalities. With the city being a college town, there are bars that will be more catered toward people who are in the young college age range, as well as clubs and bars that are more low-key and easy to have conversations amongst one another at. Whether you’d like to have a fancy cocktail, or a beer in a can, there will be a place to go on a night out in Omaha that will make you feel comfortable and right at home!
Next time you are planning a road trip, or want to take a weekend getaway somewhere that you’ve never travelled to before, consider traveling to Omaha or Lincoln Nebraska. You may even be lucky enough to spot one of our Promotional Models working hard to educate guests about a product at one of the local liquor stores, as well as at some of the best bars in town!
In this day and age, there are so many tools that can be used to market your business. Social media advertising has become an extremely popular and cost-effective way to quickly and easily update consumers on your business, events, and promote your company daily. Although Facebook and Twitter are great social media sites to market businesses of all sizes, Instagram is the social media platform that is often considered to be the “future” of social media advertising.
I’m sure that you’ve heard the phrase “a picture is worth a thousand words”. Well, with using Instagram as a tool to advertise, the picture that is being used is the obvious focal point of the post, and the caption that is written below it is looked at second. Therefore, the pictures that you choose to post on Instagram should be visually stimulating enough to make the person scrolling through their feed stop moving their thumb and taking a look at your eye catching post! By using filter and editing apps such as VSCO and Snapseed, you can turn any picture into a work of art that will be sure to catch everyone’s attention, leading to higher engagement and gaining more followers.
Instagram is visual content. One of the reasons that Instagram is doing so much better than other social media sites to content market companies of all sizes is because consumers are visual. Think about when you’re sitting down at a restaurant and looking at the menu. What catches your attention first? Chances are your eyes first gravitate toward the menu items that have a photo next to it instead of the menu items that don’t provide a visual photo. It’s true that 90% of information transmitted to the brain is visual, while 40% of people will respond better to visual information than just plain text. When people are actually seeing what is available to them, instead of just reading about it, it results extremely higher engagement!
The use of hashtags is so helpful to target the audience that you are aiming for. Instagram is such a huge social media network with people from all over the world (over 500 million active monthly users to be exact). There are businesses of all industries imaginable using this social platform to grab attention from others in their industry and make themselves stand out amongst the competition. By using hashtags that are related to your business, it helps narrow down the views that you get to people that are related to the industry you’re in. For example, on Modern Talent’s Instagram, the hashtag #PromotionalModels and #BrandAmbassador is always used on posts in order to help find new Talent to join our team!
One of my personal favorite things about using Instagram for business is that it’s really FUN! There are endless ways that you are able to grab the attention from followers. Everyone loves a funny meme, joke, or a relatable quote that makes them laugh. It’s fun to go through photos, edit them and come up with fun and engaging captions. Coming up with new content to post to Instagram is basically like an art creation that is going to be unique to your business!
Thanksgiving is just around the corner, and not everyone is going to be skilled at the art of making a home-cooked meal. Nothing would be worse on this holiday than making a meal or dessert for your friends and family and noticing that no one is eating it, or pretending to enjoy a few bites to be polite, then discretely tossing the rest in the garbage can. If you’re the family member or the friend in your friend group who is assigned to bring the non-food items to a Thanksgiving dinner such as extra serving bowls, tablecloths, or even the napkins, there is a chance that the host knows that you should stay away from the kitchen!
If you’re not the one that’s hosting Thanksgiving or bringing any of the main dishes for the meal, don’t feel as though you can’t still please the crowd. There’s so many options of beverages that you could bring along that everyone will love. It’s true that you don’t need to be a professional chef to “wow” everyone at the gathering! Whiskey and wine are great options for a Thanksgiving meal, because they pair well with the aromas, tastes, and spices that are in common Thanksgiving dishes. Here are a few ideas of whiskey and wine products that will be a huge hit, and won’t require any time in the kitchen either (you can’t burn wine), so it’s a win-win for you and the other guests.
2 Gingers Irish Whiskey: 2 Gingers Irish Whiskey is the perfect crowd-pleaser whiskey. It’s been called “the whiskey for non-whiskey drinkers” because of the sweet vanilla and caramel flavors, and its smooth finish. The delicious “Big Ginger” cocktail only requires ginger ale with lemon and lime garnish, so it’s easy for anybody to make! This whiskey pairs wonderfully with a smoked turkey.
Mumm Napa Brut Rosé: The holiday season is the perfect time for some “pop, fizz, and clink” with a sparkling wine. Mumm Napa has a great selection of sparkling wine at a very reasonable price point. The Mumm Napa Brut Rosé in particular will pair well with basically anything that’s on the Thanksgiving buffet. The wine’s dryness tastes wonderful with turkey, stuffing, and mashed potatoes. While at the same time pairs perfectly with sweet foods such as sweet potatoes, cranberry sauce, and pie. You really cannot go wrong by walking in the host’s front door with a bottle of rosé!
Gentleman Jack: This classic Tennessee whiskey has just the right amount of caramel and dry fruit notes, with a smooth and smoky finish that would pair well with turkey and squash dishes. It would cater well for the guests who are more experienced whiskey drinkers that enjoy a glass of whiskey on the rocks, especially while watching the football game from their comfiest living room sofa.
Josh Cellars Pinot Noir: A good pinot noir is essential for a Thanksgiving meal. Why is this? Because the soft tannins in the red wine with the tart acidity pair amazingly well with rich dishes being served. Thanksgiving meals generally have a lot of earthy flavors, and the herbal notes in Josh Cellars Pinot Noir will compliment the meal perfectly. You may have to pick up more than one bottle of Pinot, because with dinner most wine lovers will want more than one glass!
If you still can’t decide what kind of wine will go over well at your gathering, check out your local liquor stores, because there’s a good chance that one of our Wine Professionals or Promotional Models from Modern Talent will be sampling all different types of options of wine and liquor products to sample and pick up. No matter what it is that you bring to Thanksgiving, whether it’s the turkey, wine, or even the napkins…the most important thing is that it’s a holiday spent with your favorite people!
If you have ever attended a Trade Show of any kind, a launch party for a new product or service, a bar, or any other live event, chances are that you have seen or had a conversation with a Promotional Model. These outgoing, fun, attractive men and women are staffed to grab the consumer’s attention, educate them on the product or service that they are promoting, and leave a positive lasting impression leading to more word-of-mouth business and marketing. Statistics show that 74% of consumers identify word-of-mouth advertising as a key influencer in their purchasing decision. Promotional Models are becoming a more and more popular form of advertising, and are an incredibly useful and impactful asset for any event.
The Promotional Modeling Industry has been around for decades, and is a marketing strategy that is used all around the world. As popular as this industry is continuing to become, there are many common misconceptions that people have about what exactly Promotional Modeling involves.
Myth #1: Men Cannot Be Promotional Models:
While it is true that most of our Promotional Model staff are women, we also have men that are Models for Modern Talent. There are many opportunities for men to work In-Store Demos, Bar Promotions, Trade Shows, Wine Tastings, and more.
Just like Modern Talent’s women Promotional Models, we hold the same standard for male talent that they MUST be reliable, outgoing, and friendly in order to continuously be booked for events.
Myth #2: It’s an “Easy” Job:
“Don’t Promotional Models just stand around and hand out free samples and look pretty?”
I’ve heard this statement before, and it couldn’t be more wrong. Promotional Models are booked as a voice for the brand that they are representing, and are fully educated on what they are promoting. Some Promotional Modeling shifts can be 8+ hours long of standing and walking around while talking to countless people, which takes a lot of energy and stamina. Not everyone is able to keep a smile on their face for THAT long of a period of time. Especially when wearing high heels or being outside in the freezing winter months or hot summer. Not so easy!
Myth #3: Promotional Models Only Dress in “Skimpy” Attire
Although there may be certain events where the company will want their Promotional Model to wear a bathing suit, or tight and revealing attire, but it is not always the case. Most of the time, the Model will be assigned to wear black bottoms with a logo t-shirt or tank, an athletic-type jersey for sport focused events, or other not so revealing types of outfits. When a Model is invited to an event on PopBookings, they are already aware of what kind of attire that will be worn before they apply to be booked. That way, a Promotional Model won’t be booked for something where they wouldn’t feel comfortable.
Myth #4: You Need to Have Modeling Experience
If you have already worked as a Model or Promotional Model in the past, that’s great!
However, already having experience in the Promotional Modeling industry is not necessary to be booked for events with Modern Talent. Most people who want get into Promotional Modeling are already outgoing, good with people, and are passionate about their work. If someone has experience as a bartender or waiter/waitress, or worked in the retail industry, those are excellent skills and past experience to bring up in an interview for a Promotional Modeling job!
Our Promotional Models at Modern Talent are charismatic, outgoing, and friendly with the customers that they are communicating with. Along with being friendly and educational on a product that is being demonstrated at an event, body language from a salesperson is a huge factor in the way a person is perceived by a consumer. Non-verbal communication is just as, if not more important than the verbal conversation that our Brand Ambassadors are having with customers. There are little changes that a salesperson can make to be more aware and conscious of their body language while they are working, or in any other social situation!
To be more specific about what exactly our body language is, it is simply our body movements, posture, as well as our head and hand movements. Since a first impression of someone will always be based on what mood that they appear to be in, a good salesperson can turn into a great one just by improving their posture, gestures, and movements to engage in better conversation with a consumer. By making small changes in our body language, it will add an even more positive and friendly vibe to the encounters with consumers. Did you know that 70% of buying experiences are based on how the customer feels they are being treated? By just being aware of how you are being perceived from your body language, it is almost certain that personal sales goals will be easier to reach!
Our posture reflects our emotion, attitude, and our intentions. When trying to sell a product, no matter what that product is, it’s important to be conscious of how we appear to others. Little things that sometimes we don’t even notice that we are doing gives off a negative first impression to a person. These include folding arms while standing, looking down or looking at your phone, and having a resting face where no positive emotion is being shown. These actions are considered to be “closed” body language. Nobody wants to talk to someone who looks like they don’t want to be approached. Although we can’t always help what our facial expression is because we aren’t always looking at ourselves in a mirror, it makes a world of a difference to be smiling and inviting to customers rather than stoic and looking uninterested. Any customer walking into a store would much rather want to approach someone who is open and inviting, facing them, and appears eager and excited to educate them on a product.
Being the right distance away from a customer will also make an impact on how comfortable they feel interacting with a new person. Standing too far away from someone is both awkward and makes it hard for there to be any substantial conversation between the Promotional Model and the consumer. Standing at the right personal distance where facial expressions and eye movements can be easily be seen and interpreted by others is the most beneficial when engaged in a conversation while showing positive and “open” body language!
Whether a person is trying to sell a product or service, or is trying to improve the way that they are perceived by others in their personal and dating life, making positive changes to your overall non-verbal body language by becoming more aware of posture, facial expression, and movements can make the world of a difference in success when interacting with people you just met.
Modern Talent takes pride in their Models. Everyone who joins the Modern Talent team (no matter what market they are in) are interviewed by the Operations Manager before they begin working, go through online training, as well as a shadowing shift with an experienced Model before being on their own. Modern Talent also stands out by having well-dressed and presentable Models who are passionate about what they do and what they are educating consumers about.
For most of Modern Talent’s In-Store Product Demos, Trade Shows, and Wine Tastings, the Models are assigned all-black business professional attire. Sometimes, it’s difficult to find cute and trendy black clothing that is a good value and will last a long time. From experience with shopping for plenty of black professional clothes that are cute as well as comfortable while standing, I have some ideas of places to shop that has the best selection for black tops and bottoms (shoes too, of course!)
Express is such a great option for shopping for black clothes for both men and women. They always have great deals and an amazing sale section in the back of the store. Express does an incredible job of keeping up with trends, rotating their clothes quickly (they go on sale fast!). One of the best part about Express as a store is that their clothes are of good quality, and won’t hurt your wallet either. It’s important to wear clothes that fit just right to get the most out of the style of clothing and to be comfortable, and there are a wide range of sizes that Express provides to make sure you find the right size.
If you’ve ever been inside of a Forever 21 store, especially if you’ve been brave enough to go inside the Mall of America location, it’s a HUGE store. Although it can seem overwhelming and crowded, the silver lining is that there are so many clothes to choose from to fit the dress code for all kinds of promotions and events. They often separate their clothes by style and color, making it easier to spot the section of black professional clothing. They have a great selection of trendy and form-fitting blazers that are set at a very reasonable price point, and are perfect for wine tastings! Most of the time there is also a large amount of employees working that are happy to help point you in the right direction so that you are able to find what you are looking for. Another plus about Forever 21 is that they have an abundant jewelry selection, which includes subtle earrings and necklaces that are subtle and trendy.
DSW (Designer Shoe Warehouse) is a great option for a store to visit when shoe shopping. Owning a pair of black pumps, black booties, and black flats are all necessary staples for your professional wardrobe for Modern Talent events and bar promotions. DSW is an amazing store because it’s wide open, and you’re able to spot what you’re looking for from a distance! It’s hard not to miss the sale section toward the back, where you can find some great deals on different styles of heels and boots. The best part is all the shoes are designer brands at a lower price point!
Of course, there are other great options for stores to shop at to make sure you are always looking your best when working your next event. Some other stores that are worth stopping in to check out are Banana Republic, H&M, Zara, and Target!
Although Modern Talent is a Minneapolis-based agency, we provide Promotional Models, Trade Show Models, Brand Ambassadors, Wine Professionals, and Samplers in many parts of the United States. One of our biggest markets besides Minneapolis and Chicago for Promotions and Liquor Samplings in particular is the beautiful city of Fargo, North Dakota.
What exactly is in Fargo, North Dakota? The answer is…. A lot of things! There is actually a lot to do and great perks about living in the city of Fargo. Our lovely Promotional Models who live in Fargo are in love with the North Dakota city, and we understand why they are!
North Dakota State: Many of our Promotional Models and Brand Ambassadors live in Fargo because they are college students at North Dakota State University (Home of the Bison) This D1 University is the home of a legendary football team, has a fun and lively atmosphere, and provides many options for different majors and career paths. Having a job with Modern Talent is a great resume builder for college students who are looking pursue a career in sales or marketing upon graduation!
Golf Courses: There are a total of five different courses to golf on in Fargo. Although the state is known for being flat, the golf courses are a beautiful and scenic spot to spend the day with friends, coworkers, and family! Most of these courses are open to the public, so if you are looking to stop in Fargo for a few days, golfing is a wonderful option for something to do! (In the spring, summer, and fall of course)
Recommended: Edgewood Municipal Golf Course
Downtown Fargo: There are countless options of dining, shopping, salons, breweries, and more located in downtown Fargo. There are two breweries that are highly recommended by the locals, which are Drekker Brewing Company as well as Fargo Brewing Company, which is Fargo’s oldest and largest brewery. There are many restaurants that have delicious options for pizza, sandwiches, small plates, and everything in between. One of the favorite restaurants in Fargo is The Toasted Frog. They are known for their fried pickle appetizer, as well as their long list of incredible martinis. If you are planning on traveling to Grand Forks while in Fargo, there is another Toasted Frog there as well!
Nightlife: Believe it or not, Fargo has quite the nightlife scene, especially on the weekends. Like I had previously mentioned, downtown Fargo has plenty of options for bars and restaurants to go to to be a part of the social scene. Some of the popular nightlife bars in Fargo that are popular among college students, especially before Bison Football games (which are located at the Fargodome) are Rick’s Bar and Chub’s Pub & Package Place.
Next time you are planning a road trip, or want to take a weekend getaway somewhere you’ve never been before, consider traveling to Fargo, North Dakota. You may even be lucky enough to spot one of our Promotional Models working hard at the local liquor stores such as Happy Harry’s, and at some of the best bars in town!
There are many different occasions and gatherings where everyone drinks wine. Holidays, birthdays, bachelorette parties, graduations…the list goes on and on. Whether you are a wine “expert” or just beginning to start trying different wines, it can be overwhelming to be in a liquor store, bar, or at a wine tasting and looking at all the different types of wine and different colors that they all are. When wandering and getting lost through the isles of the liquor store, looking at all of the countless bottles perfectly lined up on all the shelves, it can be intimidating, time consuming and even frustrating at times to figure out the perfect wine to bring to a party, or to just enjoy with your dinner that you’re making at home.
Each type of wine can be “paired” with different types and flavors of food. Whether it’s meat, cheese, pasta, soup or anything else you can imagine to eat, there is the perfect type of wine that will go perfectly with it. The concept and knowledge of “Wine Pairing” is the process of pairing different food dishes with different kinds of wine to enhance your “wining and dining” experience!
Our Wine Professionals at Modern Talent would be more than happy to help out a fellow wine lover find that perfect wine to go with their meal. Wine pairing is like an art that can easily be mastered. Basically, pairing wines with food that goes well with it will have complementary components, richness, and textures. If you don’t already have any background knowledge on wine pairing, I have some of the basic pairing tips for popular types of wine to help figure out what wine will go best for your next gathering or a night in with a homemade meal.
Champagne: For an event such as New Year’s Eve or a graduation celebration, champagne and sparkling wines are extremely popular amongst the guests. Champagne complements the best with salty foods like pretzels or chips, especially if the champagne is dry like a brut. The saltiness in the food will make the champagne taste more refreshing.
Recommended: Mumm Napa Brut Prestige
Sauvignon Blanc: If you’re planning on having a “lighter” meal such as a salad with a tangy vinaigrette, light fish, or green vegetables, a sauvignon blanc is the wine to go for. The citrus flavors in this wine complements best with grassy flavors, tart flavors and a zesty spice!
Recommended: Kim Crawford Sauvignon Blanc
Chardonnay: A lightly oaked Chardonnay is a great choice for a “crowd pleaser” wine. A crisp Chardonnay pairs very well with a buttery salmon meal, as well as chicken, pork, and/or pasta with a creamy sauce. When choosing a salad with this type of wine, go for a cheese-based salad, such as the always popular Caesar salad!
Recommended: Château St. Michelle Chardonnay
Pinot Noir: A pinot noir is a great option to bring to a gathering, because it is known to be versatile for pairing with a variety of foods. Another great thing about it is that it can be served room temperature or chilled. The light-bodied Pinot Noir pairs well with roasted chicken, pork, and vegetables, especially mushrooms.
Recommended: Josh Cellars Pinot Noir
Cabernet: This full-bodied, rich, and complex red wine is perfect with meals that are meaty and richer sauces in texture. Bring a bottle of Cabernet to a steak dinner, or enjoy with a burger. Cabernet is a great choice of wine in the fall and winter because it pairs well with comfort food such as beef chili or stew.
Recommended: 19 Crimes Cabernet
To further educate yourself on the concept of wine pairing, there are many resources that are available online, as well as books at your local liquor store that are available to purchase. The book What to Drink with What You Eat is available on Amazon and at Barnes and Noble and is also a great source for recipe ideas and finding a wine that best pairs with your meals!
