“You miss 100% of the shots you don’t take” -Wayne Gretzky
Failure, although it hurts to admit at times, is an inevitable part of our lives. We would all like to believe that we won’t ever make mistakes, both in our personal and professional lives. In a perfect world, everything we do would go our way and just the way we plan them to without any setbacks. But at the end of the day, mistakes will be made, and we will all be faced with more than one failure in our lives.
People will face failures that are both big and small. From spilling your coffee on a new shirt, to not making your personal sales goal at your wine tasting, to not receiving an offer for your dream job.
As much as failing puts us in a negative and discouraged mood, having these life-altering moments ultimately make us work harder to reach the level of success we are all striving for. As famous author J.K Rowling once said to a graduating class at Harvard University, “It’s through failure that we learn the greatest lessons that life could teach us.”
Failing seems to be a taboo subject. Everyone loves to hear about successes and how well our family and close friends are doing, but failure is something that many people don’t feel comfortable talking about. Of course we all want to celebrate success, EVERYONE wants to reach success in their lives! But to get there, it takes hard work, goal setting, and falling on your face a couple of times to really learn what to do differently. It’s just not seen as “glamorous” or uplifting to discuss the obstacles and setbacks faced when reaching a goal.
The most successful people have faced failure in their careers. If you really think about it, if you go through life without failing, you really aren’t learning anything at all. It’s how you learn and grow in many aspects of your life, starting at the very beginning. Have you ever seen a baby learning how to walk? They fall down, over and over again. But eventually after much determination and practice, they get back up and find their balance!
The same concept of falling down and getting yourself back up again can be applied to sales and promotions. If sales aren’t where you would like them to be while working a Modern Talent shift, try asking yourself “What could I have said to make the brand I am representing sound even more appealing to the customer?” or “Would they have bought the product if I was more excited and educational while talking about it?” Understanding what you can do better to improve your sales and brand image are the first steps toward being a successful Brand Ambassador.
There are two different reactions that can happen when facing something that was unplanned: The individual could become discouraged and lose motivation to continue reaching their goal. Or, the individual could take the time to reflect on why they failed, think about what the next steps toward success would be, and work harder and more strategically, learning from their past mistakes.
Be the person who stays determined and finds their balance, and success will follow!

Can you believe that 2017 is already coming to an end?!
This year seemed to fly by! Like any year that passes, it’s always fun to reflect on the positive changes that happened over the past 365 days. This past year, Modern Talent gained some great new relationships and has continued to expand, hiring talented Promotional Models, Trade Show Models, Brand Ambassadors, and Wine Professionals in several other states. We are looking forward to our Models having the opportunity to promote Jim Beam during the upcoming Super Bowl in Minneapolis, as well as the other amazing things that will continue to happen in 2018!
I’m sure that at some point you’ve heard someone excitedly claim “new year new me!” and you may have done a slight mental eye roll. That common phrase seems a little dramatic, because we don’t change who we are as a person just because of a new calendar year. However, the beginning of a new calendar year is the best time to set new goals, both in your professional life and your personal life as well.
Goal setting is important because it gives you time to really think about what you want your future to look like. No matter what your profession is, whether you are a Brand Ambassador for the Modern Talent team, a professional athlete, or a college student, setting goals gives you long-term vision and short-term motivation to help you achieve those goals. When setting goals, write them down somewhere that you will be able to see on a daily basis to remind you to keep working hard. If you have New Year’s goals but don’t take the time to write them down, it’s likely you’ll forget about them by March.
An important strategy to consider when setting new goals is to follow the SMART model. This means setting goals that are:
1. Specific – Setting specific goals will give you a clear vision of what you’d like to accomplish, without any grey area. Making your goal specific will make you more motivated!
2. Measurable – Having a goal that is measurable will make it easy to keep track of your personal progress, and notice your ongoing results.
Example: If your goal is to have higher sales at your wine or liquor tastings, write down the specific number of bottles you are aiming to sell before going into each tasting. Keep track of your goal by making a tally on a piece of paper for each sale while you’re sampling!
3. Attainable – Why set goals that you know will be impossible to achieve? That defeats the purpose of goal-setting. Setting an achievable goal should be something that stretches your abilities, but still remains possible.
4. Relevant – To keep yourself motivated to meet your goals, decide to do something that truly matters to you and makes sense for your lifestyle and/or career.
5. Time-bound – Every goal needs a deadline so that you have something to work toward. Whether you want to accomplish your goal a week from now, six months from now, or a year from now, mark your calendar to remind yourself of where you are at for deadlines.
Goal setting is the best habit you can have in order to continue being successful in your professional and personal life. Goals give you something to focus on, and provides a concrete foundation for your drive. They should make you feel ambitious for achievement, and excited to improve yourself. Cheers to 2018!
The holidays are finally here! It’s the best time of the year to spend quality time with your close family and friends, eat delicious food, drink yummy cocktails, play games, decorate the house to make cozy and festive, and repeat beloved annual traditions!
Around the holidays, especially when it comes to New Years celebrations, sparkling wine is often the beverage of choice to bring to a gathering. Whether you are a sparkling wine “expert” or have no idea what any of the differences are between all of them, it can be overwhelming to be in a liquor store, bar, or at a wine tasting and looking at all the different types of sparkling wine and the different aray colors that they all are. When wandering and getting lost through the isles of the liquor store, looking at all of the countless bottles can be intimidating, time consuming and even frustrating at times to figure out the perfect sparkling wine to bring to a party.
Our Wine Professionals at Modern Talent would be thrilled to assist a fellow sparkling wine lover to find that perfect wine to bring to their New Years party or other holiday celebration. There are many different types of sparkling wine that range from sweet to dry, and by sampling different types of these sparkling wines at your local liquor store, it will give you a way better idea of what to bring to your gathering. For an event such as New Year’s Eve, champagne and sparkling wines are extremely popular amongst the guests. You’ll want your first sip of wine of 2018 to be something you and the other party guests will all enjoy! Champagne complements the best with salty foods like pretzels or chips, especially if the champagne is dry like a brut. The saltiness in the food will make the champagne taste more refreshing. If you are the one hosting a gathering, or are asked to bring a snack, bringing a salty treat is your best option!
If you still can’t decide what kind of bubbly will go over well at your holiday gatherings, check out your local liquor stores, because there’s a good chance that one of our Wine Professionals or Promotional Models from Modern Talent will be sampling all different types of options of sparkling wine to sample during the holiday season!
